The Pacific Northwest has done it again! We have jumped over spring and landed in summer. As my family and I sit on our front porch swing and look at the yard (it needs mowing again), I think of all the good summers we have had here and how much I love my adopted home of Spokane. I moved here from the South and consider myself a Spokanite; no matter how late in life I got my start. Part of the Pacific Northwest experience is the now chic historical renovation and revitalization of older buildings. In some parts of the country it is a trend; here it is a way of life. To know this to be true, all you have to do is to take a walk around downtown Spokane. Old buildings have new purpose and new exciting life. Here at the Steam Plant Grill we are proud of the new life that exists in our one-of-a-kind building. Can you imagine what some of the original workers at the Merchant’s Central Heating Company would think of Steam Plant Square today? This brings me to my real point. The men who worked in the steam plant for Washington Water Power often come in to look around and check out the changes. The staff at the Steam Plant Grill agrees that they are among some of our favorite guests. They can look at the two of the remaining Boilers and tell you when they were installed. Occasionally, one of them will identify themselves or a family member in one of the pictures showcasing our history. It is always nice to be able to put a name with the numerous pictures that decorate our walls. One gentleman told us the story about the winter that was so cold, that the coal froze in the train car. They couldn’t unload the coal until this gentleman and workers put dynamite into the load and broke it up. We all find these memories fascinating and always encourage people to share their stories. Nowadays we know how to unfreeze things or cool them off. . . ice cold beer and a game of pool. Come on down after a hard day of work or yardwork and share a pitcher of cold Honeymoon Wheat Ale with your friends and family. Our appetizers are delicious and make a wonderful snack or order several and make a meal of it. We have Happy Hour for our guests over 21 in our lower dining room. Check out our ‘regulars’ and you will see just how happy they are. Happy Hour is Monday thru Saturday 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM and all day Sunday. We are all happy at the Steam Plant Grill, and if you come see us, you will be happy too! Thank you, Cindy Genovesi Event Coordinator
